Spreading Awareness: SSH’s Mouth Cancer Awareness Walk in Karachi (2012)
Mouth cancer is a silent killer that often goes unnoticed until it’s too late. In Pakistan, the prevalence of oral cancer is alarmingly high, especially due to tobacco use, betel nut (chalia), and poor oral hygiene. Many remain unaware of the early signs, leading to late-stage diagnoses and limited treatment options.
To address this critical issue, Save and Serve Humanity (SSH) took a bold step in 2012, traveling all the way from Lahore to Karachi to organize a Mouth Cancer Awareness Walk.
The Journey to Karachi: Raising Awareness for a Cause
Understanding the severity of the issue, our team embarked on a mission to educate and engage the public on the risks, symptoms, and prevention of oral cancer. Karachi, being one of Pakistan’s largest cities, was chosen as the venue due to its diverse population and the high prevalence of tobacco-related habits.
The awareness walk saw participants from all walks of life—including doctors, volunteers, students, and concerned citizens—who came together to spread the message of early detection and prevention.
Spreading the Message: Early Detection Saves Lives
During the walk, our team:
✔ Distributed informational brochures on the causes, symptoms, and treatment of mouth cancer.
✔ Engaged with locals, highlighting the dangers of tobacco, gutka, and betel nut.
✔ Encouraged regular dental checkups, as early diagnosis significantly improves survival rates.
✔ Held brief awareness talks led by medical professionals to emphasize preventive measures.

Impact and Community Response
The response from the Karachi community was inspiring. Many people, including tobacco users, expressed a newfound awareness of the dangers of their habits. Some even pledged to quit harmful substances and spread the word among their families.
One of the most heartfelt moments came when a middle-aged laborer shared his story of losing a loved one to oral cancer due to a lack of awareness and timely treatment. His words reinforced the importance of initiatives like these, pushing us to continue our fight against preventable diseases.
Continuing the Mission
This awareness walk was just the beginning. Over the years, SSH has continued its mission of spreading health education through awareness walks, medical camps, and public health initiatives. The fight against oral cancer and other preventable diseases continues, and we are committed to making a lasting impact.
